Honouring our communities
Black History season 2026 in Hackney
October is Black History Month. This year's national theme is “Honouring Our Communities”, and Hackney is celebrating with a season of community events that runs through the autumn.
Hackney's Black History Season 2026 is a programme of community-led events and activity, with listings from 7 October to 12 December. It includes exhibitions, walks, talks, dance, comedy, storytelling and family days, and more events are still being added.
Hackney marks Black history all year round through Hackney Black History 365, a year-round listing of events and resources about the borough's Black past, present and future.
This year's poster artwork is by Giana De Dier, who photographed Hackney changemakers in 2025. One of them, community activist Rena Kydd-Williams, has had her portrait placed in the National Portrait Gallery.

Looking after our planet, together
Planet and People
Climate change affects health, food and communities, here and around the world. Small everyday choices add up, and you do not need to do everything to make a difference.
- Choose Fairtrade coffee (and tea, chocolate and bananas). Fairtrade gives farmers a fairer deal as they face a changing climate: by 2050, up to 60% of coffee-growing land could be lost to climate change.
- Walk or cycle short journeys. Our Tuesday walking group is a good place to start.
- Grow something. Join the Wednesday gardening group at the surgery.
Add your voice: the Fairtrade Foundation is asking the UK Government for strong laws so that businesses prevent human-rights abuses and environmental harm in their supply chains. Sign the petition, Demand Business That's Fair to People and Planet.
Fibroids: your symptoms matter
Fibroids are a very common condition affecting many women throughout their lives. They are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the womb and can cause symptoms such as heavy periods, pelvic pain, bloating, tiredness from anaemia, and sometimes fertility problems. For some women, fibroids have little impact, but for others they can affect daily activities, work, relationships, and overall wellbeing.
We also know that fibroids are particularly common among Black women, who are more likely to develop them at a younger age and experience more severe symptoms. Yet many women describe living with symptoms for years before seeking help, often because heavy or painful periods have been normalised or dismissed. No one should feel that they have to simply “put up with” symptoms that are affecting their quality of life.
Talking about fibroids also gives us an opportunity to reflect on health inequalities and systemic racism. Systemic racism refers to the barriers and disadvantages that some ethnic groups can face within wider society and healthcare systems. These inequalities can influence how quickly symptoms are recognised, how comfortable people feel accessing care, and whether they feel listened to when they seek help. While healthcare professionals strive to provide compassionate and fair care, it is important to acknowledge that patients’ experiences are not always equal.
At our practice, we believe that every patient deserves to feel heard, respected, and supported. We encourage anyone experiencing heavy periods, pelvic pain, persistent bloating, or concerns about fertility to speak with a member of our clinical team. By raising awareness of fibroids and continuing to address health inequalities, we can help ensure that all women receive the timely care, understanding, and treatment they deserve.
Our 100-mile challenge for Breast Cancer Now
This October, a few of us from Somerford Grove Practice are taking on the 100 Mile Challenge, walking, running and getting the miles in to raise money for Breast Cancer Now. Breast cancer touches so many lives, including the patients we care for, so this cause is close to our hearts. Every mile and every donation supports their vital research and support services.
Donate, share our page or simply cheer us on. Your support means so much to us!
100 miles. One team. One important cause. ♥ Thank you! Love, The Somerford Grove Team

No Palantir in the NHS
Palantir is a US technology company that holds a contract to work with NHS data. The No Palantir in the NHS campaign says the government can end that contract using a break clause in February 2027, and that the next few months are crucial.
The campaign raises concerns about patient data privacy and human rights, about millions of pounds of public money going to a private technology company, and about Palantir’s links to US immigration enforcement (ICE) and to military use. It says Palantir’s software has reportedly been used in both. Its “Back the Break Clause” leaflet asks people to contact their MP, council and local hospital.
Take two minutes to help: send a model letter to your MP, councillor or hospital trust. Visit the No Palantir in the NHS website to send a letter

Poetry and more
Poetry I would have to say
a most pleasing way
to start the day.
A songbird at your window sill,
so much more than just
a seasonal thrill.
Then let yourself wander
where the trees stand tall,
to fully embrace
Nature's call,
such a free gift
For those who love the land,
for those who seek to understand.
My wish is that
all would find
the peace of nature
to ease each mind.
